A wedding cake that looks beautiful and elegant is truly a great thing. However, if that cake was made with poorly chosen wedding cake icing it is going to taste horribl. That said, really think about your choices when it comes to the icing for wedding cake.

Buttercream

The most popular cake icing is buttercream by far. Buttercream icing is extremely easy to design & decorate with plus it is a lot cheaper and tastes great. The drawback to this icing is that it melts when the temperature increases.

Royal Icing

Royal wedding cake icing is the choice for simple cakes with few and simple designs & decorations. This icing is easy to work with and also tastes delicious.

Fondant and Sugar Gum Paste

If your cake is going to have a lot of decorations, then fondant and/or sugar gum paste would be the best choice. Both of these icings harden after they're put on so that the details remain in place. The big drawback to these icings is that they aren't very tastier -- in fact, some people may go as far as saying they taste pretty bad. If you can, do without this icing or use a very little amount.

Marzipan

Another delicious wedding cake icing is marzipan. Marzipan can be used to in the baking of the cake as well as for the covering and filling of cake. Ingredients in this icing are sugar, eggs, and most importantly almonds. This type of cake icing is not cheap, so you will have to spend a little bit more.

Make sure you give a lot of thought to your wedding cake icing. You want it to be both beautiful and delicious. Try not to substitute one over the other.
